The 'crabs in a barrel' mentality only exists if we view ourselves as a crab. The truth is on the map.

We are all mortals.

Some former colleagues from a big company complained to me about how their leader is disliked and how their work is not going smoothly. They want to change positions to see if it improves. Their usual complaints are as follows:

  1. It's very painful to argue with other teams.
  2. The leader always assigns them tasks that they find painful to do.
  3. The work they do doesn't reflect the value of being at P8 level, and they feel insecure.
  4. Some colleagues are difficult to deal with, always finding excuses and having a bad attitude. They even report others.
  5. As a result, their work becomes boring and exhausting.
  6. It's overwhelming, very overwhelming.

At first, I would try to comfort them and say that they should just ignore it and focus on their own work. But as similar situations kept happening, I realized that I couldn't comfort them anymore. I didn't want to either because I was too busy with my own work. People who work in small companies like me might find the company closing down the next day, so we don't have the mood to analyze what the leader is thinking or how to elegantly argue. Gradually, I didn't want to participate in these discussions anymore.

Why? We are all ordinary people, and we have to return to reality, don't we?

  1. Even if the income of a relatively cheap P8 position is high, shouldn't they handle difficult tasks?
  2. It's painful to argue with other teams? Generally, arguing means that no one wants to compromise on a problem or take responsibility. In the end, if you don't want to take any responsibility, then you have to listen to me. If you can say this, there's nothing more to argue about. If you don't want to take responsibility, then you have to give up your power. Besides, does arguing like this affect your KPI? If not, then let it be.
  3. As for not being able to reflect the value of being at P8 level, I think that's good. I want that too. Does the number on your paycheck decrease? What is value? How do you quantify it? Since it's difficult to quantify, then whatever the leader says about reflecting value is just nonsense. He's the same, what value does he have that he gets paid more than you? Isn't it better to secretly enjoy it?
  4. Difficult colleagues are everywhere. All you can do is make sure they can't find any excuses. Even if there are, if it doesn't affect anything, then who cares?
  5. Bored and exhausted, well, that's how it is when you've been doing it for a long time. Do you still have your goals?
  6. Overwhelming, it's all caused by the leader's KPI. So what can you do about it? Are you willing to invest in a small company where it's not overwhelming but has a high risk? Small companies seem to have a bit of risk. Can you earn the same amount of money as you do now?

We are all ordinary people, and there are very few things we can have. Such good things don't really depend on us. No matter what, it's impossible for P8 to please everyone, and it's unlikely to not offend anyone.

Here's a little story: once a P7 said to a P8, "You're a P8, you make the decisions." Later, it was discovered that this P7 had the same salary as the P8. If I were the current me in that situation, I would give this P7 a bunch of tasks and say, "You said I make the decisions, so I'll let you handle a bunch of tasks." We are all ordinary people, and ordinary people have their own selfishness and interests. Can't a P8 show it? Elegant arguing doesn't exist. Since you're arguing, just be straightforward.
